Choosing the Right Associate Program for your Site

There are three major questions you should ask yourself when looking for an associate program to join:
1. Does it fit into your overall theme?
Stay with a theme. We discussed this in the first chapter. You have to develop a theme and then stay with it. Way too many web sites have become just a place to list a bunch of associate programs. Don't let that happen. Make sure to have one theme and strategy flowing throughout your entire site. Don't sell nutrition products and software on the same site. It doesn't work and will only confuse your prospects. Everything on your site has to have one consistent flow and feel to it.
2. Is it a good product or service?
Make sure you can recommend enthusiastically. Do you love the product or are you just trying to make some money? People will be able to tell when they take a look at your presentation. Make sure that it is a product you would recommend to your family (if it applied to them).
3. Does it pay well?
You can't make money if the program doesn't pay. Take a look at the pay plan ONLY after you have answered the first two questions. Don't jump on a program just because it seems to pay well. If it doesn't fit your site or doesn't have a killer product, you will have to pass on it anyway!

Join a Dealer Network

Dealer networks or associate programs are one of the best ways of adding multiple income streams to any web site. Although I don't usually recommend someone use an associate program for their primary product, they make great secondary products on the way to your multiple profits from any web site.
You are better off having some type of unique product, service, or item that you own reprint rights to as your main product so that you can earn the majority of the profits on the first sale to your customers (this first sale is also the most expensive one to make to them). Associate programs on average only let you keep 10% to 40% of the money off of your sales so you are better off with a higher percentage item on your front end.
With reprint rights to products at a $1,000 or less in many cases, that is where I would look first for my primary product to start off in business. Then, I would find associate programs to help me create extra incomes that all support my primary theme.

Miss Flashy Website

I’ve mention it in a previous article. Pictures and logos do nothing for your google ranking. Spiders can only read text and ignore those beautiful pictures and logos. They also slow down the loading time of your site. Listen. I’m not saying that you site must be blunt and boring; but don’t overload it with images. Make sure that all your keywords are in text and not images.

When there is a need for images, attach alt tags to it. “Alt tags” is a piece of text that you can attach to images. Consult your web design software for instructions. Search Engines do recognize alt tags. You will be missing a trick if you do not use keywords as your navigation menu. Make the Search Engines take notice of your website.

Keep it simple. A flashy website might never be found by potential buyers, while the people with the simple designs rake in the money. Remember, Miss Flashy Website is only for the Miss Beautiful Website competition.

Website Template Layout

Now we need a website template that we can use to add content to without a fuss. The internet is riddled with options as to where to find a template. This will cost you a little bit of money; even those who claim to be free will have hidden costs. Apixelpixie.com is one of the sites you can visit to get a template that is suited for search engine optimization. Another place to look at is The Theme Weaver. What Do You Look For?

1. The template should not be filled with pictures. If you can delete them it is okay. Try to only have a logo (if you insist on having one) on the template.
2. At least one, but preferably two navigation bars.
3. No frames. Frames are fixed bars and will show on every page. It cant be moved. Leave frames for the professionals. Search Engines have trouble reading indexing frames; so the ranking of your site will be influenced.
4. Tabular side bars can be used as navigation bars and are just as good as frames but Search Engines do not have a problem with indexing them. You can have one on each side for your menus and one at the top for your logo. If you want one for your Google Adwords, go for it.
5. Professional but simple. Easy on the eye colors. The layout must be simple and make it easy for visitors to find what their looking for. Your goal is get them to click on the links for the products you are promoting and not get distracted and “lost”.
6. The “copy” or text should be easy to read and positioned where it is easy to find. Go with decent sized dark font and the default web fonts.

The Software

I assume that, like me, you are no professional website designer. You will need software.
1. Dreamweaver: The best graphical website design software and also the priciest. Try to get it second hand. Sometimes you might find it on Amazon for less than half the new price. For instructions on how to use it go to Macromedia.com/support/dreamweaver/ or cbtcafe.com/dreamweaver/
2. Front Page: The software is perfectly suited for your needs; unless you want to create something fancy. Some versions of Microsoft Office have it already bundled with the program. Instructions at Microsoft.com/frontpage/using/default.htm or electricteacher.com/frontpage.htm
You can also do a search on google. Something like: “How to upload a site using Frontpage”.

Make changes to your Template

Now that you’ve got your template loaded on the screen using Front Page or Dreamweaver you will have to make changes. We don’t want visitors to see that you are selling something so you remove anything that relates to product from the template. Your product pages will be separate from your article pages. There you will put all your links to your merchants.

You might want to stop using a certain merchant or the link to a specific merchant might change. If that happens it will take a lot of time to try and find all the pages with a link to a specific merchant to change or remove it. Have each merchant in one place.

Delete all the text on your navigation bar. Replace all the graphic with text links and type in one of your keywords.

Put your logo at the top of the page. It does not need to be an image. You can type it in, change the font, make it larger, bold and/or italics. If you are going to use an image, use a gif file that relates to your product.

Delete all references to the company who produced your template. Some templates will have “bookmark this site” on each page. Be warned, those bookmarks will take people to the sites where you bought your templates from. If you don’t know how to change it to refer to your site, delete it.

The navigation bar should fit your site. Each link should point to a page.

Page Titles and File Names

Page Titles are very easy to insert using Front page or Dreamweaver. Search Engines read page titles and you should use keywords in your titles. Remember although it should be keyword rich, it must make sense because your visitors are also going to read it. If you promote websites for sale it should read “ready made websites for sale”. It must be relevant to your niche. Page titles are shown at the top of your Internet Explorer window when you open a website.

File names are used to same each page you create when using webpage designer. You firstly save it unto your hard drive and later on the internet. Again, use keyword rich names.

Every webpage has a H1 heading. Write over the heading on your original template. Keywords are the key but remember the potential buyers.


Upload Your Website

Paste all your articles on your template. Each article must be saved to a different file name and with its own page title.

Have your webhosting account details at hand. Now we can upload. With Front Page or Dreamweaver it is easy. Remember all your pages should be exactly the same, except for the content and heading. The instructions on how to load a website should be find under tutorials or technical support of the host you chose.

Links are the most important in getting top Search Engine rankings. We have to make sure that all our pages link to one another. Build a site map – a page with all your links on it. Some templates have site maps on them. You can also use your homepage ( 150 maximum) but it can look very cluttered.

External Links are worth your while. It is links to other websites. This will not be easy to get because you have to speak to the Webmaster to try and get a link to your site on their website. Put a link to their site on yours; maybe under partners before you contact or email them. This way you can tell them that you’ve put their link on your site because you find it useful. Then ask if they would consider putting your link on their website. When they say no, move on to the next.

Please do not make use of link farms or web rings. Google call them bad neighborhoods because you have to pay to get your link on their sites. You might get away for a short period of time but as soon as the search engines catch on you will be penalized.

Search Engines like you to stay niche; try a website that relates to your product but not necessarily market it. The higher the site ranking, the higher your ranking will be.

Now the wait begins. You might not find your website on the search engines for at least six weeks. That is how long google takes to index a website. The money should start to roll in within two months.

Spiders, Backlinks and Search Engines. How do You Get a higher Google Ranking.

Start with "Money's too tight to Mention. Start an Affiliate Business", then "Starting an Affiliate Business. What do I need?" and then "Keywords, Keyphrases and Pictures. Do Search Engines love Pictures and Logo's?" to get the full picture.
Let’s talk about goggas. Goggas is the Afrikaans word for bugs. In this case it is spiders. What does a spider have to do with a website?
Spiders:
Algorithms crawl the web in search of words and phrases. These algorithms are called spiders. During these searches by algorithms, the first 100k of every website that they visit is stored or indexed. For this reason it is important to know that pictures are ignored by spiders. Although spiders are the eyes and ears of the search engines, they are blind to pictures and buttons.
So, if you want to up your google ranking, ditch the fancy logo’s and images for text links. To a search engine, logos and images are useless and are regarded as clutter. It also slows down your site’s loading time. People, me included, are very impatient when it comes to the loading time of a website.
Let me put it this way. If you don’t want to make money with your site and you don’t want your website to be “seen” by search engines and you don’t want lots of visitors to your site – go on; add your logo and images. Less work for the spiders.
Backlinks:
The inbound links to your site are called backlinks. Links from one page to another from within the same site and links from another site are backlinks. The more backlinks to your site the better, because search engines will give you a better ranking if you have 350 backlinks as to having 50. Have as many links as you can pointing to a specific page on your site.
Page rank:
Google, Yahoo, MSN and other search engines, use a certain criteria to rank your website on a scale of one to ten.
1. Are your keywords relevant? Keywords should be about your product or the service your want to render. If you want to use your site to market apples, your keywords can’t be about lions. Also remember this, search engines do not care about your writing skills. A writer would try to avoid the use of the same word over and over; yet that is exactly what search engines are looking for. Want to be a good writer but not make much money or do you want to be good web publisher with lots of money. Spiders report the words they find as relevant to your site, and the more they find a specific word or phrase, the more they report that word or phrase as relevant.
2. The second thing is backlinks. I don’t need to say more about that.
3. Traffic. The more visits to your site the better your page ranking. Backlinks and keywords will attract more visits to your site.
4. Fair Play. Now I know I said that the more a specific word appears in your copy the more the spiders like it. That is true, but if you think that you can now go and fill your page with just keywords, you will be penalized for spamming. Duplicating sentences and pages or the use of keywords in a way that they don’t make sense is unethical. If your caught out, your ranking will be lowered. Please don’t take that chance.
What about the competition? With almost every niche you have chosen you will have lots of competition. In this business it is a very good thing because it means that your product is in demand by thousands to millions of people around the world. Remember that a website takes you to countries you will never see and maybe have never heard about.
To check out the competition type your keyword or key phrase into google to see what and who you’re up against. Write down the web address of the top 10. Go to the websites. In your google toolbar you will see a green bar. Hold the mouse over it and the page rank will be revealed. Write it next to the web address.
Click on the info button, then on backwards links. The google search results will tell you exactly how many backlinks the site has. Write it down as well.
Repeat this cycle with all your keywords or phrases. This will give you a clear indication of which of your keywords is the most popular.
Now you can narrow your keywords down by checking out which of your keywords or phrases brings out the most of the major companies. Try to use keywords with not to many major players in the top ten. That way you will better you chances of getting a top ten ranking. If you are not sure, look at the total of backlinks of each company. You might be able to get a sixth or seventh position, even a fourth if you can have more backlinks than most of them.
Back to Wordtracker or Overture (Words). Type in your keyword. That word and others related will come up. Clicking on each of them will show a new column. If you click on each of those relevant words in that column with a search of more than 50, it will be put at the bottom of the screen. Try to use all or most of those words in your copy.
This does not sound like much but all of them will soon add up to thousands. This could be a very tiresome and repetitive task but necessary.
Do you think this is enough for one day? I do. You’ve picked an industry, selected 10 affiliates, short listed your niche, checked out your competition and identified your keywords.

Keywords, Keyphrases and Pictures. Do Search Engines love Pictures and Logo's.

When you talk internet marketing you are talking about words. Go to any search engine and try to put in a picture. You were not very successful, were you?
As I am busy typing this, the song: “Words, don’t come easy to me”, comes to mind. Don’t crucify me if it is not the name of the song and just a line in it. I’m human, we all may mistakes.
Search engines need words to track other websites. We call it keywords. This is one of the reasons why a niche is important. The keywords will all direct you to the specific product. If you type the word fruit in the search engine you will get grapes, peaches, oranges, lemons, watermelons, figs, et cetera. Type in summer fruits and you won’t find oranges in your list. Then type in grapes and you will get the different variants of grapes, not watermelons. Can you see how important words are?
While researching your niche, you will have to type in different words or phrases into your search engines to be able to see if there is a demand for your product, like it is or in some other form. Say people need websites; do they go for websites where they just need to put in the finishing touches or do the most of them want to start from scratch. You will need different words and/or phrases for the one or the other.
Before we go any further I will have to choose your niche now. If you have not, stop. This is very important because you need to try out the process practically; why waste time if you can try it out on your actual niche.
Search engines will give you results but if you want to know how many times people used a specific word or phrase for a month you need some other program that would give you a more accurate picture. Two programs come to mind. These services allow us to enter keywords to see the greater picture. You will know exactly how many times the word or phrase has been used in search engines for a specific month. You will also get related words or phrases and its results.
1. Overture: This service is free. If you don’t have many to spend now, go for it. The problem is, with the searches done by humans, it will also give you searches done by computers and algorithms. It can complicate things a bit, because we are interested in searches done by humans only. For a start it should be okay; but when you’ve made some money, use the other service to refine your keywords.
2. Wordtracker: This is a subscription service. You will only get results of searches done by humans. This is what we’re looking for. The more times the people entered the specific word or phrase in a search, the better for you. After you have signed up and logged in:
a. Click keyword universe
b. Enter your keywords in the text area on your left. Think of your niche. In this case it will be websites or whatever you have chosen.
c. Refine your search. A whole list of words related to websites will appear. What is the actual product that you are marketing? Find it and click on it. Keep on refining until you get to your specific niche with the specific keywords fitting.
d. Although I said it is good if people have entered a specific word or phrase more, this is the time to narrow it down. Would you want to compete in a niche with one million clicks a month or one thousand. With a thousand you’ve got a better change of getting your website ranked higher.
e. Built a list with up to ten keywords.

Starting an Affiliate Business. What do I need?

With the article: "Money's too tight to Mention. Start an Affiliate Business.”, I kind of put the horse before the cart. The reason was to wet your appetite. If you have not read it please read it first by clicking on the link above.
I ended of that article by saying that there are other things that you would need before you can start a business.
1. Do you feel the fire in your belly to start a business, not just any old business but one that can give you an extra income that is sizable. A business that can become a full time business if you so wish? A let me try attitude might not get you very far. That kind of attitude will make you to give up too easily. The desire to make something of your financial situation must be strong or otherwise you must tell yourself that this is just going to be a hobby. Nothing wrong with hobbies, but I don’t think the drive is the same as when you want to be successful.
2. What are your goals? Write them down and visualize them coming to life. Set a date when you would want to achieve it. Put it up against a wall if possible. You need to see it often.
3. Set up mini milestones on your way to achieve this goal.
4. Write a monetary value down that is achievable and write it in your diary or some other place where you can see it. The best place would be where your goals are. You would need this money to achieve your goals.
5. Write down mini monetary values to your mini milestones.
6. What are you prepared to give to be able to reach your goals? Dreaming won’t get you there. You will need self-discipline, energy, and time. But, and a big but, you will always need your family and friends. Do not sacrifice them for money. Money without family and friends can be very cold and lonely. If I had to choose between a. having lots of money and no family and friends or b. being poor but happy with my friends and family; I will choose the latter.
7. What needs to be done today, do it. Tomorrow will bring its own challenges and you mite not be able to cope with it. Soon you will find yourself a week behind schedule. Procrastination is the art of keeping up with yesterday.
8. Do you have a clear plan or are you just going to see what tomorrow brings? This is very dangerous. If you don’t know what exactly you are going to do you are going to waste time trying to figure it all out. When your plan is at hand you will at least have the time to find resources if you don’t know how to do a certain task. If you know nothing about the business you are going to venture in, plan to find out what it is all about in the next few days, then you can work out the rest of your plan.

What else do you need?
1. Set up a business account. Your bank will be able to advice you.
2. Do I need to say a computer with internet connection? Your local library computer won’t do it for you. If you don’t have a computer and a close family member can’t help you out, save up and buy one.
3. Now you need to get that website.
4. Collect or write content for your site.
5. Set your site up.
6. Patience. You won’t start up the business and tomorrow your bank account will be healthy.
7. Be persistent. This might be an unfamiliar field but with time you will know exactly what you are doing. Read up on jargon.
8. Helpless with a computer, don’t be scared. As an older man I had to overcome mine. Now my wife, who encouraged me, now fights me.
9. Please, don’t put up a site that would keep potential buyers from clicking on your links. If they start to admire your pretty pictures they might forget to move on to the site of the product you promote. Money’s too tight to Mention. Start an Affiliate Business.

During the eighties (or seventies maybe), there was a song that I loved very much. The name of the song is: “Money’s to tight to mention.” There is also a specific verse in that song: “Don’t talk about money, money. Don’t talk about money, money. Don’t talk about money, money, money, money, money.”
I can’t remember the artist but I used to think that she is probably a millionaire and she doesn’t want to talk about money. If she can’t, who can? I was still very young and thought when an artist say or sing about something that they really experienced it. Now I know that although some did, most of them are just singing to bring in the money.
In the light of today’s economic climate, so many people lose their jobs and are frightened to mention money. The word becomes a swear word if you’re without it. Bills to pay, groceries to buy, school fees, petrol (or gasoline for the Americans- why do you always have to be different), clothing, and ….. and ….. The list came be too long when there is no money.
When you do get some; who do I pay and who will have to wait till next time? What can I buy and what is not a priority? Do we eat out or shall we eat at home? Cinema or Television, what shall we watch?
The best bet would be to start some kind of business that is sustainable and not to expensive to get of the ground. Some online businesses are relatively cheap to set up. Try affiliate programs as a starting point.
What is an affiliate program? A lot of companies make use of affiliate programs to sell their products online. Affiliates are you and me that promote somebody else’s product online and receive commissions of up to 60% from some of the companies.
When you type in the term affiliates, you will be bombarded with literally thousands of affiliate programs. Do you think that it is stupid to ask somebody else to promote your product and give him or her such a big cut of the money? No, not at all. By having hundred more sites to promote their product plus there own site, they start to make serious money. They can surely start to talk about money.
Think about it, you decide what you want to promote, don’t have to buy it but can make some good money promoting it. Remember, I said good money, not millions.
What do you want to promote? It is entirely up to you. Start with something that you are familiar about or something you like and can talk about. To stick to a certain product is called a niche. You will see the term niche marketing a lot.
To try and jump into a wider market right away would be foolish. You can always diversify later, when you’ve got the knowledge and you have to spend less time on your first niche. Then you can start another niche.
A very good niche to start with would be websites built by professionals. The websites of this specific company are really the best of the best. Any one that is starting a business and does not have a website should try them. Do you need a site? This company will give you one of the best affiliate programs with life long commissions and ongoing training.
You say that you don’t know much about websites? They will train you and take you step by step with your affiliate program.
Well you can still opt for another product if you don’t want to do websites. As I said, there are thousands out there. If you do choose another product, please check out the following:
a. Can the merchant capable of converting your leads into sales? Look at the site. Is it easy to use? Do they persuade you to buy? The ordering process must be relatively easy.
b. Look at their commission structure and compare it to other companies into the same niche.
c. Are they well known?
d. The affiliate sign up page must easy and without legal terms you don’t understand.
This is just to make you think. Start by getting your website ready

Finally, a way out.

When you’ve been out of a job for several years you kinda get desperate and you would try anything just to be able to put bread on your table. Believe me, it is the most difficult thing in the world not to know where the next meal will be coming from.
Yes, I do believe that God is my Provider and He has not let me down thus far. Every time I thought that tonight we’re going to sleep hungry He would come through for us as a family. Sometimes I would ask myself why do I have to be so dependant on Him. He would answer that it is the only way that I’m going to keep the faith so that I can be a testimony for Him.
When you don’t have money to buy clothes, food or pay your bills you don’t want to be a witness for any one. Yet, when you think about the miraculous ways in which He provided and still is, for you, you just have to be a witness. Some people just don’t understand that at all.
I know that there will be people out there who reads this and say: “Just another one of those mad so-called Christians that wants to shove their believes down our throats”. Believe me, if I had a choice, I would just let you be, but with Him in my corner I can’t. just have to tell you, even when this was not the reason why I started this article.
The reason why I started this article was to talk about my struggles to get to a place where I did not have to worry about the next bread. Yes, He provided for me but I still had to get to a place where I did not want to worry. About two years back I stumbled upon the term affiliates on the internet. When I started to read more I told myself, god is finally going to take me out of my financial woes.
Was I wrong. Everybody made it sound so easy, just click here, then there and whallah, the money is on its way to your bank account. Nobody was honest enough to tell you that you need a credit card to access certain items. Everybody would say you don’t need a product or money to start an affiliate business.
They were and are right, that is if you just want to sign up as an affiliate. You would only find out later that you need a website to market those things. When somebody does not know the internet and is desperate to make some money you just jump in and try to pick up more information later.
With no food in your home you want to see a check by the first payday that comes around for the company your are an affiliate for. Yes, you are so desperate that you are stupid. Where did you ever hear that you can make money without investing money.
For two years I tried to find a way to make money without any success. I had no program running because there just was no money. Without a regular income your first priority is to see to your family’s immediate needs. Things just got worse as time went by. I got to a point where only a miracle could carry my family, and it happened day after day.
Last year I downloaded quit a few free e-books because my dream was to market e-books. I just kept on downloading them without reading any.
Then, in January of this year I opened one of the books and started to read. My miracle has arrived; actually it arrived last year some time already. I started to read the book with disbelieve but had a few campaigns running before I got to the end. Listen hear, I did not have to pay a cent except for my internet connection. The only other investment that I had to make was lots of time. I’m still busy even as I write this article.
The skill to write articles did not come naturally to me and my home language is not English, but know that God has given the miracle into my hands I’m going to work and work until I have refine it. Today it is not about how good my writing is; it is about getting the word out.
